First celebrated in Texas, Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans in the U.S. In the years that followed, newly freed African-Americans mobilized by prioritizing the reunification of communities and implementing lasting change.
The Lizzo Juneteenth Giveback honors the spirit of this work by using Lizzo's platform to spotlight the work of Black-centered grassroots organizations and movements. Celebrating its 5th year, the campaign is focusing this year on uplifting unsung activist heroes and promising young leaders through a series of virtual conversations.
Lizzo gets deep with Planned Parenthood clinician Kara James, legendary Houston trans rights activist Atlantis Narcisse, youth environmental activist Mari Copeny, champion for the unhoused Shirley Raines, and rising musician Ugo Obudulu. They discuss the intersections of liberation, giving flowers to grassroots leaders, and the importance of community joy in the face of adversity.
